I keep right clicking on the cell and hitting the format key. I think I've done it but it still gives me a month and switches the date order. ie. 05-08-2007 to May 8, 2007. It has to be August 5, 2007. THis is going to the UK and they want the date their way.
Excel question: How do I format a cell to accept a date as the UK version? ie. Aug. 7 2007 as 07-08-2007?microsoft support
right click on the cell. choose format cell. select the number tab and then change the locale to great britain/the UK then you should have several choices on how you want the number/date to look

First, select the cell or cells you want. Then go to the "Format" menu. Select the "Cells" option, which should appear first on the list. Make sure the "Number" tab is the tab you have open. Click "Date" in the list. You now have two new lists: "Type" and "Locale." In the "Locale" list, scroll down to English (United Kingdom). Now the "Type" list will change. Select the date format you would prefer. Click "OK" and you are done.
If you go to custom format you can use combinations of dd/mm/yy to put the date in whatever format you want.
dd will give 2 digit number eg 01
ddd will give first 3 letters of day eg Mon
dddd will give you the full name eg Monday
It's similar for the months (m) and year is either yy for 08 or yyy for 2008.
The cell is not in a date format. That is why you cannot format it to appear as British version dates. Depending on location, type exactly '8 aug 2007' or 'aug 8 2007'. Excel will recognize it as date and you can format any way you want. eg "dd mmm yyyy" or "mmm dd yyyy"
